Is rap considered music?

So I have the passed on response of a friend that's not on this forum but wanted to respond to you through me. He's educated on the genre, and even though we've agreed that you might just be a "troll" he still wants to give you an informative response. So here it is!


Rap is definitely music. To say that rap is just someone yapping on the track just shows how ignorant that person is about the musical aspects of rap.


Also doesnt help that the OP used Eminem...current Eminem...the annoying past his prime Eminem as his example. (#1 red flag that indicates the indivodual doesnt belong in a serious Hip Hop discussion)


Thats like someone saying novels based on vampires suck because Twilight. Bad example


Anyways with regards to the musical aspects of rap, it revolves around rhythm pretty much. The rapper are not just "talking" has to be able to deliver their rhymes at a suitable rhythm to the beat, otherwise they will sound horrible. Singers harmonize and utilise vocal range, rappers instead use focus on rhythmically reciting their lyrics (or what we call "flow") and delivery and presence on the mic.


How is that not music? Is rhythm not a part of music? Who says that real musicians only sing?

And for the record rappers do their own form of harmonizing that suits the Hip Hop context.

You call those tracks great music? I can easily evaluate what's a good quality song and discard a song that is poor quality and trash...I discarded them (the tracks) all.
