That's why my favorite albums are always the ones that I can always find new things in-"Black Saint and the the Sinner Lady", "Ys", "Unjust Malaise", and virtually all Feldman

I'm not sure I'd use the word "quality." That suggests to me that it's a sort of competition.

A great example of something that made my toe shoot up in my boot: a few weeks ago I had the mp3s on shuffle and it played a part of a longer orchestral song cycle, long enough to be divided into seperate tracks. The music built up and right at the point it would have resolved, it suddenly switched to a drum & bass tune from the middle of another set. It magically stayed in key, and the tempo shifted but not unnaturally. It was like being in a room and suddenly the wallpaper radically changed design on its own. I don't remember what either piece was, but that moment was truly something else. Not remembering it adds to it. If I knew what it was and could replicate it, I might ruin it should it ever happen again because the wow factor wouldn't be there. Moments like that are the ones that make things most enjoyable.

Rob , what do you think of Biosphere's Substrata album? ...didn't do much for me! I agree with the unfamiliarity of music in that if I listen to a piece of obscure music it is likely to be for the moment and not the same as a more mainstream recording!

This might blow your mind but while I've heard it I've never heard it as an "album." I checked my library and I have a few hours of his music but it's compilation appearances and live things. I know him mostly from his collaborations with the Orb and Fax Records, and I've seen him at festivals and heard him on the radio.

My consumption of music in general does not really revolve around the idea of an album, or any other format really. I'm more about radio shows, live shows, compilations, and individual tracks. I also don't think of mainstream versus obscure -- it's all obscure to me.

Well, we're getting into a discussion then of how it's consumed. Why would one go to MTV or FM radio for music? Don't those entities just exist to advertise to you? Are they really about music or about advertising? Does MTV even have video shows anymore? I haven't even considered these since about 1983 or 1984.

Music for me comes from a lot of sources -- usenet, junodownloads, beatport, internet radio, shoutcast, creative commons, tribalmixes.com, actually going out to see shows, and friends. I subscribe to last.fm and di.fm as well, having found spotify and mog completely inadequate, since they require you to base your choices off of performers and their personalities. I don't think of my method as greater or better, but there's more through these channels than I can possibly keep up with, and the variety is astonishing. I'm such a music fan that I haven't bothered to own a television in 30 years. And when I say "music fan" I mean I'm interested only in sound from point A to point B in time -- I'm not really interested in artists other as a way to mark style -- e.g. okay here's Grooverider, it's going to be drum & bass, okay this will be good for the next couple of hours. I've heard Adele as well as Biosphere this way but for me they're completely on equal footing, just as likely to come up as anything else.

When you say mainstream I think of the old model where you went to the record store and hung out and bought an album when you heard something you liked. I don't miss that at all. It strikes me as a stagnant, circular way of consuming, rather than a journey. I much prefer the immense choice I have now.

I disagree. Going into the record stores in my youth was a journey. One I undertook whenever I could afford it. Could not get home fast enough to put them on the turntable. Now we have instant music, and just like instant coffee, most of it is crap. Most of those internet radio sites are loaded with just as much advertising as MTV. Anyway the discussion was not about how things are consumed but how they are perceived. And no, it's not the same thing.
