What Are You Listening To?

BRUNO MARS "doo wops and hooligans" cd,2010.

had this one since its release, played it quite a few times so i believe my review and subsequent score is pretty accurate now....much the same as Cee Lo's will be when that comes round again shortly....
and you're probably going to bag my rating here, because, well he is a commercialised popstar...but i genuinely love this album!

debut album by this once Elvis impersonator and part time session vocalist.
reached #1 in over 20 countries, five hit singles from it, three #1 hits in Aust and UK in "grenade","just the way you are" and "the lazy song"...the first two were also #1 hits in the US.
not sure if this is the start of a great career, another flash in the pan act or someone who will continue to make guest appearances with other major artists...pretty hard to tell right now, but he has the potential if the material keeps on coming...
am surprised a little bit by the overall score here, knew it would rate pretty good...but this good, well...thats the way it happens.
Dani loves this album also...she just doesnt get into the rating system like MH and myself even though i have explained it to her...its either "hate","like" or "love" with her...
also love the fact that Bruno doesnt give a crap about filling up all 76+ minutes available on cds, rather makes ten good tracks at around forty minutes...thats the way i like it!
as we all know the hits off this one,i thought i'd just provide links to some of the other tracks so you can hear something different from Bruno Mars..
I LOVE THIS ALBUM

She is woman, hear her squeak. After 10 albums, that's what the timid little voice had become. Had forgotten she
was an Aussie. Probably their biggest export at the time after Olivia. Still a good album with only two tracks I
don't like, but she was on her way down at this point, as it was the last album to chart in ths US at a weak #75.
An unusual pairing with Runaways producer Kim Fowley wasn't as off the wall as it may sound. Still mostly the soft
rock material that Helen was accustomed to with a few exceptions. Baby I'm A Star is the only thing that seems
totally out of place, trying a bit too hard to do something different, leading to a worst rating. Helen picked up
half of the writing credits here, a bit unusual for her. Best track is one of hers, The Happy Girls, sounds more
like sad girls, but it's pretty. No charting singles are showing from here, but I would guess at least the leadoff
of You're My World had to have been released. I've heard better male versions of this classic, but Helen's is ok.

I LIKE THIS ALBUM

Worst Track - Baby I'm A Star

Best Track - The Happy Girls

Sally met him in the war, back in 1944
He took her home to the states
His buddies thought that she was great

Subway sally's 51
Her man is gone, the dreams are done
She rides by night the Brooklyn train
Sleeps by day to hide the pain

Lonely women of the world
We're the happy girls
Lonely heroes of the world
Seek the happy girls

Nancy saw him on the street
His shoes were shined, his suit was neat
She couldn't see his broken mind
Behind the mask of being kind

He sleeps inside the iron bars
Nancy's smile can't hide the scars
Her daughter's grown, there's no one home
She cries all night, she's all alone

Lonely women of the world
We're the happy girls
Lonely heroes of the world
Seek the happy girls

To tell the truth there's no end in sight
Mr Lonely always calls at night
Let's hold on tight until the morning light

Terry's gonna meet him soon
Today at school, maybe noon
I hope for her it turns out right
I know she's got a date tonight

Had my ups, had my downs
Truth was lost but truth was found
This I've learned, the world still turns
We all get bruised, we all get burned

Lonely women of the world
We're the happy girls
Lonely heroes of the world
Seek the happy girls

Happy girls, happy girls, happy girls

you wrote "probably their(australia's) biggest export other than Olivia at the time"....

just wondering if The Seekers/New Seekers were actually that popular in the US around the same time..or if you forgot they were from Down Under also?

sorry...the Seekers were predominantly mid/late sixties...the New Seekers were the seventies incarnation of that folk group.

ADELE "19" cd,2008.
debut set from young Adele, not quite as good as "21" but not far from it neither.
music has a bit less "oomph" than her latest effort, a few more quieter jazzier, bluesy numbers...
recieved two Grammy nominations for this one...best new artist and best female pop vocal performance, of which she won for her "chasing pavements" single.
strangely enough, both here in Australia and New Zealand this album never charted until "21" became a hit, has since eached #2 on both album charts, obviously swept along by her recent successes...album reached #10 in the States and #2 UK, has currently spent almost three yrs in UK charts and is still at #18 there, and after two yrs is still #11 in the US charts, also still selling well here at #25 after almost a year in the charts and #15 in NZ.
two top 10 hits in UK(tracks 3 + 9) and a further two top 20 hits there also with tracks 4 and 12.
all up, a very, very good album getting a love score from me....

I think it's his best one yet.
Only one I've heard that I don't care for is that grenade thing.
Even like the lazy song, except for the stupid video.
