Robert Cray Nobody has done more (this side of Taj Mahal and possibly Keb' Mo') to bring Blues to the casual-listening, pop-oriented middle...and not diluted himself nor "played down" to the serious fan. Doesn't mean you have to like all that he does, but everything presented deserves a measure of respect. Thing of it is, he's fiercely independent but stayed a good man--an uncommon trick in the music biz. Terrif on-point bio on AMG--after reading, natch, roam the discog--aces across the board. Hubert Sumlin Howlin' Wolf's lead guitarist for 20 years, and continued with The Wolf Pack another 5. As a mark of deep respect, The Glimmer Twins paid his funeral costs. 17 discs under his own name. The later CD to get is '98's I Know You--A bit pricey but 4-1/2 stars. Sings pretty effectively too.

Hendrix, because , duh, he's Jimi Hendrix, the guy who plugged blues and rock
into his psychedelic amplifier and turned the world on it's head.
I don't listen to straight blues much anymore mostly because it can be too
predictable, musically , but I do listen to Hendrix. Anyone not familiar enough with Jimi
in regards to him being a top Bluesman should spend more time with him ; it's as simple
as that. I always loved the psychedelic , edgey , funky, rocked-out twists he threw onto
the Blues, which were his roots , musically , and I've always loved others who did that
capably, like
Robin Trower , who has cranked out plenty of nasty blues rock in his day,
and some recently. On of the better collaborations IMO has been him and J
ack Bruce , as in this one from their 'Seven Moons' cd
