PAUL WELLER "saturns pattern"
Paul weller's 12th solo album,
that makes 23 overall(including Jam/Style Council)
in a 37 year career so far....
first up...
i cant stand the title of this one, cant stand the
cover art enither, but thankfully, it gets better from there.
album starts off with "white sky" which opens with orchestrations
mixed with backwards guitars and loops before launching into
a blistering Oasis sounding guitar deluge...
we hen follow that one with the title track, a piano based track
loosely structured on "put a little love in your heart"...
follow that with a paino ballad(going my way) and a Bowie-esque sounding "long time".
then we move up to track five(pick it up), that has a funk tinge attached.
"im where i should be" sounds like a Blur do on their album tracks.
another funk-based track "phoenix" follows that nicely, which in turn is followed
by "in the car" which is a sonic landscape of sounds and different melodies and finally
"these city streets", which is the only real dud track on the album IMO...
the deluxe version contains two extra tracks, the very, very good soul sounding
"roadrunner" and athe acoustic "dusk til dawn" to round things off nicely...
all up, not a bad album, certainly better than his last three overall, and probalby about
the best thing he has released since 2005's "as is now"...
look, theres nothing outstanding on this album but it is consistant.

The hexagon on the cover is supposed to be representative of a 'hexagonal' wind pattern that occurs on Saturn.

Thanks for that info Jerome, I wasn't aware of that....
Now I'm wondering what it has to do with the album or PW????
Maybe Weller has a thing for astronomy as he also has another album called "heliocetric", which translates from Greek as " centre of the sun" or "the sun as/is the centre"..... depending on where you get the meaning from.
He als has a song called "echoes round the sun" written with Noel Gallagher which is almost psychadelic in sound.

Anyway,
This album should debut at #1 in the UK next week, probably Japan also, and top10 throughout Europe.

on the UK 'mid-week' charts this week the Paul Weller album is sitting at #2 on debut, just 300 sales behind the new Brandon Flowers album....
already,
in his twelve album solo career has 4 #1 albums and 5 #2 albums(the rest made the top5 also)....
thatsd a pretty good effort IMO, nine of his solo albums have made it to the top two positions...
his last UK 'platinum' album in the UK was 2009's "22 dreams",
his last two releases "wake up the nation" and "sonik kicks" only got to gold and silver status resprectively.

Ruby......
if youre thinking of getting this Paul Weller album i suggest you invest in the Japanese import copy....
it contains four extra tracks ALL of which are better than anything on the 'western' release....
i wont be getting it though, i already have the standard release and the vinyl is on order, i cant justify the $40 for it
even though the other copies i got were giftcard money.

Thanks CH - very useful info to know. Will invest in this one at some point, and go directly for the Japanese import.
