Restructuring The Forum Genre Boards
#1
OK, here's the deal:

The site is due to undergo some seismic changes soon, so we can take the opportunity to redesign the genre boards, and this is your opportunity to have your say.

We currently have eleven boards covering various musical genres, and although things are getting better, there still seems to be some confusion over which discussions belong where. Some of this will be different genres meaning different things to different members, but can we structure our genres in more user friendly way ??

Eleven should be more than enough boards, but what sub-genres fit well together ?

Some examples:

Should a band like Depeche Mode be covered under Electronica, Alternative, or Pop ??

Does Otis Redding go in the Jazz, Funk, & Blues section (Despite being neither a J, F, or B musician), or is he a Pop singer. To me he's a soul singer, and there's no section for Soul. So do we need a board just to cover black American "pop" music (Rhythm & Blues, Soul, Funk, R&B) ?

How do you think our categories of genres can be improved ?

Should we introduce more descriptive details of the genres, with maybe example artists to give a clearer idea of what fits where ?

Have your say, or I'll do it myself, and you don't want that...

I'd split Rock and Metal, make Jazz a stand-alone board and combine Blues/Soul/RnB into something like "Black Music" or what ever and yes I'm totally aware of Jazz being black music as well.

Or you could make some sub-boards like Noise/Electronica/Drum n Bass/Power electronics or whatever in the Electronic board and the others.

I second Iota on splitting Rock & Metal.

Here is my preferred genre list, in alpha order.

Alternative / Indie

Blues / Rock

Christian / Gospel

Classical / Opera

Country / Folk

Dance / Pop

Easy Listening / Jazz

Electronic / Techno

Film / Stage / Soundtracks

Hip-Hop / Rap / Soul

Metal

Ended up with 11, sorry

As far as the descriptions underneath, instead of the quotes we have now, I would rather see a list of 5-10 artists that fit in each genre, maybe rotating those periodically. Of course those would raise controversy.

Alternative.

The above list works well with one or two additions.

Country / Folk / World

And Reggae in there somewhere? Or does it fit with World?

from my list I did intentionally drop Reggae/Ska and Punk as I don't feel they are relative to today, but World you may have a point, although I don't know what it means. Does it mean a different language other than english? If not, then why isn't U.K. music world music to me?

I don't like the term "world" music either. To me a better term is simply "folk". But many people associate "folk" with early Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie, Joni Mitchell and the like. To me folk simply means traditional and regional music. Because of this a distinction has to be made.

I like Ed's list.

One question, though:

With renovations completed, what will happen to all the existing threads? Will they have to be separated by hand, or will they just disappear?
