Records Banned From Radio Broadcast
#1
I've just been exploring a list of records banned by the BBC, to try & find out when a song was first banned, & what it was.

The Cole Porter song Love For Sale appears, having been banned in 1930, but I'm sure there must be earlier examples.

Does anyone know of earlier instances from around the world ??

Similarly, does anyone have any stories or thoughts about particular banned songs ? or about banning & censorship in general ?

I'm prepared to be in a minority of one concerning my interest in this matter...

In 1967 The BBC banned A Day In The Life By The Beatles ................The main part was the phrase "I'd love to turn you on " a reference to drugs

Early in 1967 My Friend Jack by The Smoke was banned again for drug references Lyric was " My friend Jack eats sugar lumps .................Sugar man's been traveling all he can " LSD here

In The UK Judge Dread managed several bans with his singles Big six, Big seven , Big eight .......one of which was number one

Max Romeo managed a UK ban for "Wet Dream"

The Sex Pistols` "God Save The Queen " was banned by the BBC

The Monkees "Alternative Title" was banned as it was originally called "Randy Scouce Git" after a phrase used by Alf Garnet in the series Til Death Us Do Part.

In parts of the US "The Ballad Of John and Yoko " by the Beatles was banned for it lyric " Christ You know It Ain`t easy "..............special promo copies were issued with the word Christ beeped out

Again in the UK "Puff The Magic Dragon Was Banned " for its Drug references ( See MH's article on Songs people must hear .

Hi Hi Hi by Wings was banned in the UK for its supposed sexual content

Give Ireland Back To The Irish was banned by the BBC for it's political leanings

"Happiness is a Warm Gun" was banned in Brazil for its sexual content

There are more but that's a startCool
Nice to be able to go back to trust and friendship!!!!!!!!!

It's a mixed up sensation this being alive
Oh! it wears a man down into the ground
It's the strangest elation
I can't describe it
Oh it leaves a man weary
It makes a man frown.

Prodigy?= "Smack my bitch up". I assume it was a reference to cruelty to dogs. The video was quite clever/ Ironic.

This Nofx song talk about this issue; here's the lyrics:

NOFX LYRICS

"Please Play This Song On The Radio"

We wrote this song, it's not too short, not too long

It's got back-up vocals in just the right places (in just the right places)
It's got a few oohs and ahhs (oooh aaah)
And it takes a little pause
Just before I sing the F word

Please play this song on the radio

Almost every line is sung on time
Almost every verse ends in a rhyme
The only problem we had was writing enough words
(oooh aaah)
But that's okay, because the chorus is
Coming up again now

Please play this song on the radio
Please play this song on the radio

Please play this song on the radio
Please play this song on the radio
Please play this song on the radio
Please play this song on the radio
Please play this song on the radio (please play this song)
Please play this song on the radio (please play this song)

Right about this time
Some shit head will be drawin a fat fuckin' line
Over the title on the back sleave
What an asshole!
So Mr. DJ I hope you've already made your segue
Or the FCC is gonna take a shit right on your head

Can't play this song on the radio (can't play this song)
Can't play this song on the radio (can't play this song)

John Lennon's "Working Class Hero" was banned from the airwaves in the UK because he used the f*** word

However one of the most interesting bans was an Apple release Apple 8 King of Fuh by Brute Force.................this is one of the rarest releases from that label .........................seems innocent until you get to the chorus...........listen
