If you like modern Southern soul or Gospel, then you know the "Sovereign of Southern Soul". Nobody has the back-catalog, the current roster, the reach and heft of this company. They have been accused of some sharp biz practices (artists' contracts, licensing agreements, etc.) but Motown was certainly guilty of this too. Tough business, where only the sometimes ruthless survive (see: Morris Levy at Roulette et cet.). SteveO and I are so on the same page recently, it's almost frightening. So: Bettye LaVette. Gifted soul singer in the '60's who really only came onto her own in this century. She did a 2010 piece that just riveted me: an interpretation album of British Invasion and a bit later music--to call it a "cover album" is a slander--it's re-imagining songs iconic in their way and so you'd think no such project was possible.
