That's by far my favorite Deano track...I have a double CD of his songs not necessarily all hits. Another unmistakable voice of his own! Music Head Wrote:^^

Lionel's debut as a solo act, after leaving the Commodores. While still with the group Lionel recorded a duet with
Diana Ross, thus setting the stage for his departure. A success at both ventures. Three singles released, all of
which make up my love tracks. Favorite of those is Truly which was the highest charting at #1, and got the man a
Grammy. The other 2 singles, My Love and You Are, also went top 10. The album alternates between dance and ballad
tracks. Don't usually care for dance tracks, but making an exception here, as You Are is excellent. Nothing I don't
like here making the album just shy of the love mark. The album reached #3 on the pop charts and #1 on the r&b. The
Lionel train had just left the station.

FRANKIE GOES TO HOLLYWOOD "welcome to the pleasuredome" cd,1984. #1 UK, #1 AU, #33 US
dumbass Americans!!!!!,why didnt this sell out there?????
one of the ten best albums of the 1980s IMO....
they got their name from an old poster of 'old blue eyes' Sinatra...
full of dance pop(relax, title track)through soul laced ballads(krisco kisses, black night white night),anti war songs(two tribes, war), and power ballads(the power of love).
there's even three covers on here...Springsteen's 'born to run', which they come awefully close to out-rocking The Boss, Edwin Starr's 'war' where they even have an impersonator inpersonating US President Reagan, and 'happy hi' which is a renamed title for 'do you know the way to san jose'(just cant fathom out why they called it something different?). there's even another impersonator on the spoken track 'the last voice' immitating Prince Charles.
the title track last a a full thirteen minutes here, much better than the four minute single version IMO and is best track on here for me.
'relax' was incidently the first single ever to sell three million copies in the UK(Elton's tribute to 'diana' out sold it eventually). these guys also became only the second artist to get their first three singles to top the UK charts(the first was Gerry & The Pacemakers, also a liverpool act!).
their debut single 'relax' also managed to stay in the UK charts for over a year(unheard of back then) and probably mainly due to the fact they released a different remix 12" vinyl single of it every month for a year....
Godley & Creme produced the videos here and their studio band was actually Ian Dury's "blockheads" band...not that any of it sounds like them though!!!
all up, a superb piece of 1980s pop that has stood the test of time to my ears nicely, thank you very much!!!!
allmusic rate this one 4.5/5(2.7 here),my score is only slightly lower than that, but what the heck, its brilliant anyway!

^ This would make a GREAT thread Crazy mate ! ...go for it !!!!...the fact that some albums/artists are big in only certain countries and virtually unknowns in others ! What do you think the reason is ?

i could be way off with what i think the main reason is, but i'd suggest "cultural location" being the main factor...
as an example take Boston,Chicago,Steely Dan,Beach Boys as four artists off the top of my head...have a distinct "US Rock" sound, big out there, odd chart success elsewhere due to their "US" sounds, people couldnt relate to them...
same thing goes for Sex Pistols,Clash,The Jam...uniquely British themes.
Midnight Oil,Split Enz,Slim Dusty...uniquely Australian themes
Soundgarden,Pearl Jam,Nirvana...uniquely Seatle sounds...
that said, those artists did score a few big hits in other countries, but it wore thin,i suspect they had those hits they had elsewhere because they may have sounded different at the time(a breath of fresh air for a short while,so to speak!??)
obviously there are other acts that were bigger in other countries than in their homeland also like Stray Cats,Billy Idol,Suzi Quatro,Pink,Eddie Cochran, Carl Perkins to name some off the top of my head.
and there are obviously artists who 'speak to the world'..why some and not others,i dont know neither...IMO The Beatles(as good as they were) were no better at musicianship than Small Faces,Who,Kinks, yet they succeeded internationally where the others had spasmodic chart success, go figure out that one, because i cant??!!!???
maybe some research into this phenomena would be a good idea...its something i need to think about a bit more though before posting a thread on it....
