Is U2 a good band?

Both yes and no.
They used to be a good band, but then they slowly lost it. They should have quitted a long time ago and focused on new music projects instead (one of those bands/artists).

I only really like The Joshua Tree and some tracks from Rattle and Hum. Everything before and after those albums I don't rate highly at all. In terms of their musical ability I don't think any of them are seriously talented. They are just a pop band who got lucky. And Bono's constant parading around with politicians and big names irritates me. He thought he was going to change the world single-handedly. I think he has since realised it does not work that way. I have been told on many occasions that they are a good, entertaining live band but I have never been to any of their concerts. They just don't do it for me. There's nothing truly unique in their material. Just my opinion.

Again, U2 are a great live band...I don't really like their studio albums as a whole! There are several bands and artists that release bland studio albums but come alive in a concert setting!
The ultimate connection is between a performer and its' audience!

Green Day are the same IMO... bland music for he most part but excellent live performers.

I feel like their reputation kills them. If not for their reputation as some legendary band, I doubt anyone would have any issue with U2. Their music, in general, is nice filler music. I've yet to really find anything from them that's overly offensive. I don't know if I'd consider them as good as their reputation, but, I don't have any issue with their music. I generally like it. Even their new album, "Songs of Innocence," I generally like. I wouldn't pay money for it, but, its good enough.
So, short answer; yes. They're a good band. Not great. Not legendary. Good. |
