What Are You Listening To?
Something is bugging me about your Oasis posts MH....

Just an observation mate but.....
Shouldn't they be in alternative instead of pop??

I just listened to my first Katy Perry album. I'm so proud. Surprised to find this in the Wal-Mart discount bin for $5. I was holding out for a
best of set, which has to be due. A lot of Perry haters out there, just like Taylor. The girls have some talent, both in the studio and as
performers. Even a bigger talent when they write their own material. This is Katy's second album. Her first was released seven years prior to
this and never sold a lick. I Kissed A Boy took her to the top of the genre. Went to #1 in the ony countries that matter. Not crazy about that
song but I did find 2 I love off of here. This is her second best selling album of her four. I wouldn't mind filling in my Katy Perry collection
rather than waiting for that best of set.

BEN FOLDS "the best imitation of myself-a retrospective" cd,2011.

disc #1.

North Carolina born Folds released his first album with the Ben Folds Five back in 1996 and since then has released ten studio albums, and several live sets.
he has never bothered the UK/US charts very much, scoring several minor placings in both the albums and singles charts...his highest placing single in the US was "landed" reaching a peak of #77 there, but has had several top 20 albums there, he has never cracked the top 30 in the UK with any release...but here in Australia he has had numerous top 20 albums and a couple of top 10 hits in "brick" and "rockin the suburbs"...his success here with albums and live performances probably had something to do with his decision to move here around six or seven years ago.
his music is primarily piano based alternative pop, whilst some songs are serious in nature, others are quite satirical and sarcastic...add to that the odd bit of explicit language and you have an artist who does not get much radio play, thus the reason why he just doesnt sell records IMO.
i dont own any other BF albums but have enjoyed listening to him perform on TV over the last three decades...having no other albums i thought this would be a good introduction to his music as it is spread over three discs, the first(this one) contains his singles, the second contains 21 live tracks, and the third contains 22 b-sides/rarities, so for the price of a single disc you get 61 career spanning tracks in this anthology
i have only played the disc posted here and my only concern with it is that for a 'best of' disc it doesnt score as high as it probably should...makes me also think that if this best of set rates very average....just how bad is the rest of not only this album but his studio albums also!

BEN FOLDS "the best imitation of myself-a restrospective" cd, 2011

disc #2.

the second disc in this retrospective/anthology set by Ben folds is a live disc...
its tracks from live shows recorded over his career until the mid 00's...
the problem i have with live discs like this one(not a show but snippets) is that is patchy...
the songs are okay, but i dont like a second or two silence between tracks and fade out-fade in applause for each track...
again, i dont score live disce, i either loathe, like or love them...
this one as a whole...i dont like it, but as individual tracks its ok,
so going against my policy this one gets a score of 1.65 purely for the like/dislike approach to it in order to give a final score for this triple set after the next post.

BEN FOLDS "the best imitation of myself-a retrospective" cd, 2011

disc #3

the third disc in this boxset contains demo versions of songs, b-sides of singles and a couple of previously unreleased tracks...
as i dont really know much about his previous albums i have no idea how these versions compare to the original official releases so i can only score
on the basis of these ones...
the guys has very good tongue-in-cheek lyrics IMO, his melodies are often restricted and sound similar over all these discs, and his voice rarely changes
tone or octave...which can be monotonous and boring sometimes...
getting back to his tongue-in-cheek lyrics, listen to "dr.dre...bitches aint shit" where he literally takes the piss out of rap music and their stereotypical lyrics.
i actually hear sounds similar to some of Tim Finn's on some tracks, not sure if Ben was influenced by the Finn Brothers/Split Enz but there is a distinct similarity there...
at least the tracks on this disc have a bit more variation than the first two discs...
