championing the unheralded--an ongoing thread

Alan Broadbent An NZ man who is perhaps the best string/orchestral arranger of our time. An outstanding pianist, working with Charlie Haden for many years. You've heard him hundreds of times without being aware of it--the mark of a consummate musician/ arranger. Here's the wiki (tunes later to be inserted): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Broadbent and his site: https://www.alanbroadbent.com/
BTW, if you want to give string arranging a go, there's this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k5Rg7nGZ9fA some tunes:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G8Fe0kDJ2PY << solo piano
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3FwTRX9M32w << trio setting
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U6gzYNDPPHY << with big band and a bit of explanation about why this project
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NaUpaWpOJ20 << with Charlie Haden
As a composer:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5yVBaRbvLVs << written as a commission for Diana Krall--this perf is a graduate recital, so purity and nervousness are to be expected
As an arranger:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DJn6zff5GBU << Natalie Cole--I think I got the right version; willing to be corrected
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4IF8fFXpz0w << Charlie Haden/ Shirley Horn
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-lN1-r4cvts << Glenn Frey traipsing that well-trod GAS* path

BONUS: about a 1/2 hour interview & perf clips--skip tp 1:20 then press "PLAY": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3rWHgVTSHjo << the interviewer is something of an all-about-himself gasbag but Mr. Broadbent gives in-depth answers in his usual self-effacing style to soft-ball questions...And those perf clips at Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola, Lincoln Center, NYC...

GAS = Great American Standard songs,i.e. Gerswin, Schwartzmann, Porter, etc.

Idris Muhammad passed away a week ago today at the age of 74. He was a fabulous jazz bebop, soul and funk drummer as well as a composer who performed with his own bands and with countless musicians!

Hadn't heard of Mr. Muhammad's passing. Yours was a fitting tribute, Bro SteveO--good job.

ADDED 8/10/14-- here's an reasoned obit by The NYTimes premier jazz critic: http://www.nytimes.com/2014/08/09/arts/m...at-74.html << the click-throughs are mainly paid promos--seek out the originals on YouTube or elsewhere--you'll be amply rewarded.

For just this one perf, we can thank both Lennon/McCartney for writing it and that wicked, wicked Pickett for doing it (big shout-out to Skydog, natch): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B5B1Vfdk7W8 << The encouragement to shy guys like me is incalculable but, trust me, immediate and long-lasting.

Cover albums/tributes by either solos or groupings have become a strong cottage-industry. These include artists doing stuff out of their usual genres. Still, when such a piece comes along, it's a minor shock. Martina McBride has done just that with Everlasting, an album of soul/R&B covers. I think it's better than AMG's 3-1/2 stars but here's the piece and some songs: http://www.allmusic.com/album/everlasting-mw0002613784

Hard to imagine a fresh take on The Beatles...but here it is--a series of 4 albums (and counting) of various Memphis artists Black and White doing the Fab 4. Quality variances among the artists are to be expected, of course, but overall, it works brilliantly. Here's a review of the first one, with a promo snippet following:

The org that did the albums also puts on shows. Here's a song from one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zypa4uBR4Fo
You can get a taste of the individual songs and download MP3's from the Usual Suspect.
