Iota Wrote:...Black Sabbath is NWOBHM... ???... Anyhoo, if you want a good sampler, there are plenty on stonerrock.com. You may have to sift through some noise and amateurish stuff, but I found enough to make me happy.

Iota Wrote:My God, you don't have any clue, do you? Black Sabbath is NWOBHM, idiot. If anything descended from Sabbath, it'd be Sludge. Sabbath is not at all any form of NWOBHM, and stoner metal does descend from Sabbath, they are one of the most direct influences in it.

Whoops, what the hell, I misstyped the whole sentence lol. (if this is bugging you gtfo I'm not english)
So, yes, they aren't. NWOBHM kind of descended from Sabbath. It's only the heavy riffs that might be influenced by Sabbath (colossal influence yeah). I could as well call Iron Butterfly or Led Zeppelin the founding fathers of Stoner metal.

Arguing genres is like arguing politics. But I'd say the distinguishing factor of Stoner Rock is that, apart from the heaviness, it's more like hard rock than metal, especially when you consider the simple riffs and more traditional rock/blues base. Same with Sabbath, especially since they really pre-dated the wide use of the term anyway.
In my mind, metal has really come to mean everything from NWOBHM and Motorhead forward that has wandered away from warm, comfortable rock riffs, and relies more on speed, aggression, chugging, and soloing with scales outside the blues scale. Of course, the music press calls anything harder than Enya "metal", who who's to say?

Also, I don't see Stoner and Doom metal being the same thing. I'm sorry to state the obvious but that's why there are two different terms. So don't group the bands together.
I agree with others who have said Stoner Metal is very close to hard rock. For me Doom Metal is more true Metal. There is less of the Blues sound in it. Yes the two styles are similar. Oh, and for those who don't know, NWOBHM - New Wave Of British Heavy Metal.

I don't really like Stoner rock. I like Death Doom though (eg. My Dying Bride) and Epic Doom (eg. Candlemass)

Iota Wrote:My God, you don't have any clue, do you? Black Sabbath is NWOBHM, idiot. If anything descended from Sabbath, it'd be Sludge. erm... NWOBHM stands for New Wave of British Heavy Metal. Black Sabbath were the first real heavy metal band - how can they be new wave? NWOBHM was early 80s metal (Iron Maiden, Saxon etc) And pretty much all types of Doom Metal are inspired by Black Sabbath. Doom is metal played slow and intense, like Sabbath. Stoner is the more grungy, psychedelic form - epic is more operatic, sludge more punky, death doom has similarities with both death metal and goth, and funeral doom is so extremely slow that it's really a kind of extreme or experimental metal. But they're all inspired by Sabbath |
