Rate The Song Above You
#1
Ok, I don't know if this sort of thing is permitted, or if it's already been done.

If it's not, feel free to delete the thread, it's not that big a deal.

The idea is to post a song, and the next person to listen to it, rate it 1-10, then post a song of their own choosing.

The next person rates it, posts theirs, etc, etc.

There aren't any hard and fast rules, just a couple guidelines.

Try to post something that maybe hasn't been heard by a ton of people. You post 'Free Bird', and no one has to listen to it to give their opinion.

If you can, say why you did or didn't like it. Not any great detailed report, just a thought. "Too plodding" or whatever.

Ok? Here goes:

I hope I am not seen as being too negative here, but there was a thread like this one on another board of which I was a member. At first it seemed like fun, but I got over it very quickly. After I posted a couple of songs that got quite poor ratings from the next person, I realised that there was a bit of a clique that seemed to like a particular kind of music - quite different to what I liked - and who seemed to own the thread, patting each other on the back for their good taste, metaphorically speaking. This was pretty discouraging. At first I was thinking "What the hell can I post that they WOULD like?", then I decided what's the point in that if it's not something I really like as well. I gave the thread (and eventually the entire board) a miss.

I much prefer the informality of threads like "What are you listening to", where I am free to comment on someone else's choice or to keep silent as the mood takes me, and likewise people can choose to comment on mine if they wish.

That's cool. You don't have to participate.

As far as cliques, you'll find those at every site. People get to be friends, I reckon.

I've been a member here for a while, but my visits here are sporadic, at best. I don't have a lot of posts, and I can go literally weeks without posting.

However, I can honestly say, I've never seen anything like you're describing at this site.

It's obvious some posters are friends, but they're not mean spirited or on the scout for trouble.

Give these cats a bit of a chance.

I, too, left a site because a trio of trolls were always harassing posters with snide & derogatory comments about artists, for no other reason than to push the buttons of other members. Get a reaction, antagonize someone.

They never bothered me, and even if they came after me, they wouldn't have upset me. I just got tired of seeing it, so I left.

I knew nothing would be done about it, because all three were pals with the owner, and all three were mods.

Wow. This thread seems to already be more trouble than it's worth.:tongue2:

No, not at all. As you said, "that's cool".

And I believe I know the site you are referring to, but no point in naming names and digging up the past here.

Anyway, regarding the song you posted: I really have trouble rating it, because on the one hand I can hear it's really well performed, well sung and well produced - but on the other I'm not keen on this type of music, of which I hear a great deal around at present. There seems to be too many words or something, and too much staccato.so I give 3/10 for the song itself, but 9/10 for the performance.

Wow, that was a shocker. I swore at first it was a Byrds, or Animals, or Turtles cut. It's easily that close to being a track on any album between 1967-69.

I would not be the least bit surprised if this a cover. It could easily be an original from the 60s.

I really liked it. 7.5/10.

Yes that Temples track is very Beatlesque, I like it. Would have fit quite happily on Revolver. 7.5/10

As for the Foo Fighters, I do like some of their songs, but that one not so much. 3/10

Guess I'll play.... I don't see much point in posting songs that people are bound to know, so I'll try for things well away from the mainstream.
