THE SATURDAY SONG
#31
The Best of Bowie (1980) compilation was the third new record I ever bought.

I’ve been fascinated by outer space and mind-bending notion of infinity since I can remember and the first three tracks on that album are “Space Oddity”, “Life on Mars?” and “Starman”!  And a few things have happened this week to put me in mind of Mr Bowie, who seems to have continuously reinvented himself throughout his life, almost becoming more substantial as he went along, and then even posthumously. Let me just say, that I do not love everything he did, musically, but he was undisputedly a charismatic, creative human being, and he had a great mind, which I like.

Bowie made “Space Oddity” prior to the moon landing - it was released on 11th July 1969 just days before the mission departed - machinations perhaps?? From Wikipedia - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Oddity According to Bowie: "It was picked up by British television and used as the background music for the landing itself in Britain ... Though I'm sure they really weren't listening to the lyric at all; it wasn't a pleasant thing to juxtapose against a moon landing. Of course, I was overjoyed that they did." Upon realising the dark lyrics, the ceased playing it until the Apollo 11 crew safely returned home.

It’s a mere 56 years ago now, and only 44 years later that Chris Hadfield recorded his somewhat altered version aboard the ISS in 2013. The first music video ever to be recorded in space (which begs a few questions about copyright, I believe! Funnily Bowie did not hold the copyright on that song and he supported its return to the internet once the licence held by Hadfield had expired after one year.). And then today, I bumped into Fred in our library bookstore who had picked up a copy of Angie (Bowie) Barnett’s biography Free Spirit, while I nabbed Hadfield’s An Astronaut’s Guide to Life on Earth. And then (it must have been subconsciously), I realised I’d included a Buzz Aldrin quote in the quiz I run once a month – “Fantastic view, magnificent desolation.”  (Upon setting foot on la luna – apparently Rolleyes )

It’s so strange to think that when we first heard these songs, that is all there was available – at least for most of us, at the time. Hearing them. No YouTube clips, no visuals other than live shows – you had to listen, which was really not a chore – it was magical. Now we have all those incredible photos of our beautiful earth, and a spaceman’s rendition going viral.

Because I’ll never forget the magic of listening to those three songs especially, today’s song is “Space Oddity”, with a Chris Hadfield interview thrown in for good measure. He and Bowie could not possibly be more disparate, in career and persona – so interesting how each one had such high regard for the other.

I had occasion to spend this afternoon in the forest - a sketching afternoon - birthday present from an artist/teacher friend, so trees have been pretty much top of mind all day. Very nice to spend time among them! The tree song that sprang first to mind is Mark Knopfler's "Redbud Tree" from Privateering - quite mysterious and deceptively simple seeming, which it's not. There are some tricky time signatures hiding in this tune! The lyrics leave it up to the listener's imagination - they are suggestive of an event, rather than absolute in the telling thereof.

And then because it's such a great song and I just love the thought of these super ancient trees that have borne witness to millennia, I could not resist including "Bristlecone Pine" as well. Written by Hugh Prestwood but never recorded by him as far as I can tell. Eliza Gilkyson's version ...

I’ve had Delicate Sound of Thunder on repeat all week. This seems especially fitting right now … mind you, tragically, when is it ever not?

Dogs of war and men of hate
With no cause, we don't discriminate
Discovery is to be disowned
Our currency is flesh and bone

Hell opened up and put on sale
Gather 'round and haggle
For hard cash, we will lie and deceive
Even our masters don't know the webs we weave

One world, it's a battleground
One world, and we will smash it down
One world ... One world

Invisible transfers, long distance calls
Hollow laughter in marble halls
Steps have been taken, a silent uproar
Has unleashed the dogs of war

You can't stop what has begun
Signed, sealed, they deliver oblivion
We all have a dark side, to say the least
And dealing in death is the nature of the beast

One world, it's a battleground
One world, and we will smash it down
One world ... One world

The dogs of war don't negotiate
The dogs of war won't capitulate
They will take and you will give
And you must die so that they may live

You can knock at any door

But wherever you go, you know they've been there before
Well winners can lose and things can get strained
But whatever you change, you know the dogs remain

One world, it's a battleground
One world, and we will smash it down
One world ... One world

Just couldn't get to this last week! Today's song is short and simple, on the surface at any rate, but I love it. Who know a recorder could sound so good?? The Latimer touch. Written by Pete Bardens for Camel's Moonmadness, and sung by him too. No guitar on this one.

It's about the inevitable march of time - the ebb and flow of our lives. Seems to pack quite a punch, to me, for a mere two minutes! It's been on my mind, so here it is ...

^Thanks for listening anyway CH. I quite like the vocal, which in my mind is intended to be a little mysterious.
Oh - and apologies for my grammar, which have goed to the dogs! (No offence to dogs - they're the only sane creatures on the planet. Wait - my cat just looked at me funny - them too. LOL!)

^This is true.

Bit of a different tack this week. Whilst waiting to go into the Johnny Cash show I got chatting to a friend of a friend who is from the USA and somehow on to the subject of bluegrass (or neograss/newgrass), some of which I quite like. Railroad Earth's stuff, for example. He told me about a short-lived 'band' that I'd never heard of before and that seems to have a bit of a cult following - they were called Old and in the Way. They only made one album, in 1975, a live album, eponomously titled. There are others from around 1996 but I think they're cobbled together from various live shows. It was a side project of Jerry Garcia's (not that I'm a deadhead) who plays banjo and sings lead vocals a lot, along with David Grisman - mandolin & vocals, Peter Rowan - guitar & vocals, Vassar Clements - fiddle, and Johan Kahn - bass.

They do a some great harmonising and seem pretty adroit in the key change department - there's one instrumental track on the album that is very tricksy in that regard! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mtkyv_fENGE

And from what I can tell there are three cover songs and two that are based on traditional pieces. Today's song is one of former because although it seems unlikely, I find it kinda winsome, and not out of keeping with the original vibe despite being worlds apart genrewise. If that's a word!

I give you the Rolling Stones' "Wild Horses" ... bluegrass style!
